Very interesting article “Teaching-oriented faculty at research universities” at last month CACM’s. The article defends the need of having faculty members whose main job is teaching so that others have more time to focus on their research.

To me this is a clearly win-win situation. Those more interested in teaching can make a career based on their teaching excellence while those that prefer research can get a lower teaching load and avoid those first-level degree courses full of inexperienced students 🙂 It´s well known already that super professors able to excel on both aspects do not exist

Let´s hope rectors and deans from many European universities read the paper!
